Unit 5 - Africa
In this unit, students will be studying the physical and human geography of Africa. Students will learn how people adapt to living in a desert region. Students will also learn about Nigeria, specifically the many cultures that make up this country.
Chapter 20- Life in the Sahara and Sahel: Adapting to a Desert Region
In this lesson, students learn about the ways people have adapted to living in the varied environments of a desert region. In a Response Group activity, they investigate three environments of the Saharan region—the desert, the oases, and the Sahel—and make predictions about how people have adapt to life in each. Students then read to determine the accuracy of their predictions. Finally, they examine their own physical environment to identify the ways in which people have adapted to living there.
Objectives
Students will:
• describe the physical characteristics of three environments of the Saharan region: the desert, the oases, and the Sahel.
• identify ways in which people have adapted to life in these three environments.
• analyze the impact of desertification on people living in desert regions around the world.
Chapter 22- Nigeria: A Country of Many Cultures
In this lesson, students explore the regional differences within the country of Nigeria. In a Social Studies Skill Builder, they learn about Nigeria’s three regions: northern, eastern, and western. They examine and categorize photographs from the three regions, and read about and record information about each region. They then use the photographs and their research to design a Web page about the regions of Nigeria.
Objectives
Students will:
• describe the characteristics of the physical environment, ethnic groups, culture, and economic activity unique to each region of Nigeria.
• analyze photographs of Nigeria to determine in which region each was taken.
• analyze potential problems of and possible solutions to the great ethnic diversity that exists within most African countries.
